“Corps à corps” at the Musée Bourdelle
Until February 2, 2025, the Musée Bourdelle explores the artistic and personal links between Auguste Rodin and Antoine Bourdelle through Rodin/Bourdelle. Corps à corps. This exhibition brings together over 160 works, including sculptures, drawings, paintings and photographs, to illustrate this dialogue.
In the first section, we discover the relationship between the two sculptors: Bourdelle, fascinated by Rodin, cut marble and stone for him between 1893 and 1907, influenced by his expressiveness. Their relationship continued with their shared passion for Asian, medieval and antique works from their respective collections.
As the tour progresses, the evolution of their styles becomes apparent. Rodin explored sculptural fragments, while Bourdelle favored synthetic, monumental forms. Both exploit masks, playing between revelation and mystery. Finally, their shared fascination with mythology sheds light on the hybrids and metamorphoses that populate their works.
The airy, accessible exhibition bears witness to this unique artistic exchange, in which Rodin, already a master, saw Bourdelle as “a trailblazer for the future.
