Memorial to the martyrs of the Deportation

Located in the heart of Paris and inaugurated in 1962, this memorial pays tribute to all the deportees of France. With its strong symbolism, this evocative place invites reflection.

Located below the square de l'Île-de-France, this monument is dedicated to the memory of French deportees. The aim is to perpetuate the memory of the Deportation, to encourage the nation to pay tribute to the victims and to encourage contemporary people to reflect on the lessons to be learned.

A visit to the memorial is designed as an ‘initiation tour’ leading to the crypt where the mortal remains of an unknown deportee are laid to rest. Fifteen urns containing earth and ashes from the main Nazi camps are placed there. This trail is designed to involve you in meditation and contemplation, encouraged by the silence and solitude.

The complementary educational trail in the upper rooms was completely renovated in spring 2016. It evokes the struggle and terror of concentration camp hell. Audio guides are available to help you immerse yourself in the atmosphere of this place steeped in history.
