See you at the Centre Pompidou

The Centre Pompidou is taking advantage of its final months before a five-year closure to make its mark with an ambitious exhibition dedicated to Surrealism. Rather than limiting itself to the great male names such as Dalí, Ernst or Magritte, the museum is highlighting little-known female artists such as Eileen Agar, Remedios Varo and Suzanne Van Damme, for a more inclusive retrospective.

The exhibition features an immersive scenography, with an evocative entrance dubbed the “Gates of Hell”, inspired by the former lair of the Surrealists, which opens onto a central room housing André Breton's Manifeste du surréalisme, on loan from the BNF. Around this pivotal point, a star-shaped thematic tour is organized, a nod to Breton's former gallery, offering an unsettling but captivating museum experience.

Featuring 350 varied works, the exhibition plunges visitors into the world of the Surrealists, exploring dreams, the cosmos and mental health, in a setting that is as educational as it is accessible. Among the major pieces, visitors will be able to admire Magritte's Valeurs personnelles, usually kept in San Francisco. This retrospective shows originality despite an often revisited theme, promising a lasting impact.
